Laurence Grave (°1970, Asnières, Frankrijk – woont en werkt in Brussel, België)

Laurence Grave neemt in haar artistieke praktijk elk linnen doek letterlijk onder handen. In haar vocabulaire verschijnen woorden als losmaken, scheuren, snijden, vouwen, wikkelen en lijmen samen met het spannen aan houten staven of beschilderen met acrylverf. Dit is voor haar geen vrijblijvend spel maar een verlangen naar een begrijpen van haar productieproces. Ze beschouwt de status van een schilderij, de materialen waaruit het is opgebouwd en de aard van het picturale vlak door het verleggen van grenzen. In zekere zin behoudt ze alle basis ingrediënten en nodigt ze via die vorm verwarringen uit om een frontale blik te vermijden. De sculpturale beweeglijkheid verschijnt tijdens het kijken en zien langs alle kanten en hoeken, schaduwen en timbres.

In her artistic approach, Laurence Grave literally bends and shapes every linen cloth. Her vocabulary is characterised by notions like detaching, tearing, cutting, folding, winding and gluing as well as attaching to wooden rods or painting with acrylic paint. To her, this is no non-committal game—it is the desire to come to grips with her productive process. She contemplates a painting’s status, the materials it consists of and the nature of the pictorial plane by shifting boundaries. In a way, she preserves all the basic ingredients, whilst encouraging confusion in order to avoid a frontal perspective. The sculptural mobility transpires while we look and watch from all sides and angles, shadows and timbres.
