In het oeuvre van Jane Bustin worden formele componenten van geometrische abstractie verweven met een intens onderzoek. Haar minimale, conceptuele praktijk combineert traditionele technieken met een grote verscheidenheid aan materialen en dragers, waaronder koper, zijde, papier, latex, gesso, keramiek en kant-en-klare objecten. 

In Geel werd ze geraakt door de legende van Dymphna, een Ierse vrouw uit de 7e eeuw die martelaarwerd en in de 14e eeuw een kerk kreeg ter ere van haar volharding en toewijding. Ze wordt herdacht en vereerd door een lelie, een bloem die barst van symboliek, van liefde en zuiverheid, vrouwelijkheid en vergankelijkheid. De porseleinen bloem wordt als enige figuratieve element van de ganse tentoonstelling contrastrijk en uitdagend gedragen door de vlakke structuren in aluminium en hout.

Jane Bustin’s creations weave formal components of geometric abstraction with intense research. Her minimal, conceptual approach combines traditional techniques with a wide variety of materials and carriers such as copper, silk, paper, latex, gesso, ceramics andready-made objects.

While in Geel, she was moved by the legend of Dymphna, an Irish woman who lived in the 7th century and became a martyr. A church was dedicated to her in the 14th century to pay homage to her perseverance and dedication. She is commemorated and worshipped by means of a lily, a flower filled with symbolism—of love and purity, femininity and transience. The porcelain flower, the exhibition’s only figurative element, is carried in a contrasting and provocative way by the flat structures of aluminium and wood.
