FUNDAMENTEEL 2

Het zijn dat ons bezighoudt

INLEIDING

Alle kunstenaars zijn me even lief.

FUNDAMENTAL 2

The existence that concerns us

INTRODUCTION

by George Meertens, curator

The title of the exhibition emphasizes the question of what is necessary for our being, what our ‘grounds of being’ are. Or, where do we find ourselves, how do we shape the earth and how does it become world.

The philosophy of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), one of the most influential and at the same time controversial thinkers of modern times, forms the starting point for the exhibition. As a guide, I have used the booklet Heidegger (2020) by philosopher Dirk De Schutter (1954).

Heidegger's thought is important because, in the fundamental question of being, it seeks an open attitude, an open path, an open field. Elements of his thought are cited to introduce the exhibition FUNDAMENTAL 2 and thus offer the participating artists a home in which each can take their own authentic place.

DE HALLE (exhibition space)

The first mention of exhibition space de Halle dates back to 1431. At that time, it was used as a market hall for linen, cloth, and meat. In 1679, it was converted into a town hall. Subsequently, it was used as a police station, school, and prison, among other things. In 2006, the building was thoroughly restored and put into use as an exhibition space. The building has multiple rooms, corridors, and stairwells.

THE ARTISTS

All artists are equally dear to me. For the exhibition FUNDAMENTAL 2, I had to make choices. Both in the selection of the thirty-two artists and in the selection of their work. I have let myself be guided by the interplay between them. Sometimes I chose an older work, sometimes a single piece, and sometimes a series of works. Some artists created a work specifically for the occasion or adapted a work to the location. I am grateful to all the artists for their open attitude and collegial cooperation. It was pleasant and inspiring to meet the artists in their studios where possible, or otherwise via digital contact. I enjoyed the collaboration, the shared thinking, and arriving at a unified whole together.

EXHIBITION AND CATALOGUE

Each room of exhibition space de Halle in Geel (BE) has been assigned its own subject, atmosphere, and intention. No information regarding the artists, titles, dates, technique or sizes is on display in the rooms and stairwells. The catalogue will serve as a guide in which every room and artist receives attention.

Three artists have created a work specifically for the location. They allowed themselves to be guided by what was found. Starting from their own practice, the artist enters into a dialogue with the given situation. Circumstances such as location, light, and dimensions of the space are contributing factors to the final image. A direct exchange emerges between the context of the space, the exhibition, and the artist's ideas.
